Location

Bawd Moss Forest is situated in south Aberdeenshire, adjacent to the A957 “Slug Road” between Stonehaven and Banchory in Royal Deeside. The forest is part of the Spyhill forest complex and sits on the sheltered south easterly facing slope of the Hill of Mossmaud, near the transmission mast. The city of Aberdeen is only 21 miles away and Banchory is the nearest town for amenities and accommodation. To locate the property please refer to the location and sale plans.

Description

The forest was planted between 1979 and 1980 with mainly high yielding Sitka spruce on relatively fertile soils where the growth of the crop has benefitted from the sheltered location. Two phases of felling have been completed with the first felling carried out in 2014 (20.21 ha) and the second phase (22.73 ha) just completed and visible on the lower slopes.

The first phase area has been restocked by natural regeneration of Sitka spruce that has been very prolific and will require some enrichment planting and then respacing in years to come. Whereas the area just felled is to be replanted with mainly Sitka spruce and some in mixture with mixed conifer for diversity. A grant is available to assist with this capital cost which will produce a good second rotation crop and investment for the future.

There is also a significant volume of mature Sitka spruce that is estimated to be growing at around Yield Class 24 and extends to approximately 28.30 hectares that will be ready to harvest soon.
